The best free online belote game: how to recognise it

Updated

There is no single "best" belote game for everyone: it depends on what you are after. But a few concrete criteria separate a good online belote game from a mere time-filler: exact rules, an AI that plays properly, free access with no sign-up, real players when you want them, and tools to improve. Here they are, with a simple way to check each one.

First, which belote are you looking for?

The word "belote" covers two related games. Classic belote is played with a turned-up card: one card is turned face up and each player takes it or passes in that suit. Belote coinchée, also called coinche or belote contrée, replaces the turned-up card with numbered bids from 80 to 160, and an opponent can coinche to double the stakes. It is the version that asks for the most teamwork and thinking, and it is the one this guide is about.

The differences are set out in belote vs belote contrée. Coincheur is built for coinche; if you only want a game of classic belote, a low-key mode exists via the "Classic belote" link at the bottom of the home screen.

The criteria that matter, and how to check them

CriterionWhat to look at
Exact rules162 points per deal (152 + 10 for the last trick), belote worth 20, a bid capot worth 250, a coinche that doubles and a surcoinche that quadruples the contract value. The taker must make the contract and score more than the defence.
Your house rulesSettings for the direction of play, the target score, No Trump and All Trump, and the rule on under-trumping.
An AI that plays properlySensible bids, a partner you can read, a defence that fights for the last trick. Several levels, from beginner to seasoned player.
AccessFree, no sign-up, in the browser: you can judge it for yourself within a minute.
ScreensReadable on a phone as well as on a computer.
Playing with peopleInvite friends with a simple link, or join a public table with a ranking.
ImprovementAn on-demand coach against the AI, drills, and an analysis of your games.

The criterion that weighs most is the AI: you spend most of your deals with it, as a partner and as an opponent. An AI that bids at random makes every game frustrating, however good the rest is.

The fifteen-minute test

  1. Play three or four deals at the highest level. Does your partner support your bids sensibly? Does the defence try to keep the last trick when the contract is tight?
  2. Check a score. A failed 110 contract must give the defence 272 points (162 + 110, belote not included); if it was coinched, 382 (162 + 110 × 2). If the count is wrong, there is no point going further.
  3. Open a room and send the link to a friend: can they join without creating an account?
  4. Open the same site on your phone, then on a computer: does everything stay readable?

To check the numbers, keep the coinche scoring table to hand.

Where Coincheur fits

Coincheur ticks these boxes, with limits. In practice:

What it does not have yet, to be complete: your progress stays on the device you play on (no sync between devices for now), and declared melds (tierce, fifty, hundred) are not supported. The best test is to start a game and compare for yourself using the checklist above.

FAQ

What is the best free online belote game?

There is no answer that suits everyone: it depends on which belote you play and what you want (quick games, friends, improving). Look above all at the rules, the quality of the AI, sign-up-free access and the tools to improve, then play a few deals before deciding.

How can I tell whether a belote game's AI is good?

Play a few deals at the strongest level and watch for three things: bids that match the hands, a partner who supports without overbidding at random, and a defence that tries to set the contract and keep the last trick.

Do I need to sign up to play belote online?

Not necessarily. On Coincheur no account is required: you play straight away, and a nickname is enough for a room with friends or a public table.

Classic belote or belote coinchée: which should I play online?

Classic belote is quicker to learn; belote coinchée adds numbered bids and the coinche, so more teamwork and strategy. Coincheur focuses on coinche, with a classic belote mode reachable from the bottom of the home screen.
