Coinche or tarot to start?

Torn between coinche and tarot to get started? Both are excellent games. The right choice mostly depends on your group and the time you want to invest.

Materials and the group

Coinche needs a standard 32-card deck and exactly 4 players split into 2 teams. Tarot requires a special 78-card deck and works with 4 or 5 players. If your group size varies, tarot is more flexible; if you are exactly four, coinche is ideal.

The learning curve

Coinche builds on belote, which is widespread: if someone at the table knows it, learning is fast, the main task being to absorb bidding and doubling. Tarot requires learning a new card ranking (the 21 trumps, the excuse, the oudlers) and handling the dog.

Getting off to a good start, whatever you pick

For coinche, start by playing a few deals without bidding to absorb card values and the trump order, then add the calls and finally the doubling. For tarot, get familiar with the 21 trumps and the excuse before tackling the dog and counting oudlers. In both cases, playing against an app or with an experienced player speeds up learning a lot, because you see the right reflexes in context.

Our pointer

If you already know belote or your group plays it, start with coinche: the transition is natural and you keep what you know. If you start from scratch and enjoy material-rich games with a wide variety of cards, tarot is thrilling. Either way, a few games are enough to get hooked, and nothing stops you learning both over time.
