How to play coinche when you're a beginner
Coinche is played by 4 players in 2 teams sitting opposite each other, with a 32-card deck. Don't worry: a deal breaks down into three easy steps.
The idea in one minute
A game of coinche is a series of deals. Each deal, you get 8 cards, pick a trump (the strongest suit) during the bidding, then play 8 tricks. The team that took the contract must reach the points it bid.
The three steps of a deal
- The deal: everyone gets 8 cards.
- The bidding: you announce a contract (from 80 up to capot) and a trump suit. The highest bid wins.
- The play: each player lays a card in turn, the strongest wins the trick. Points are counted at the end.
Winning a trick
You must follow the led suit (the first card of the trick). If you can't, you may ruff with a trump or discard. Trump always beats other suits; otherwise the highest card of the led suit wins. One reflex to remember: in trump, the Jack (20 points) and the 9 (14 points) rule, ahead of the Ace and 10. This flip surprises every beginner, but it quickly becomes second nature.
Never forget you play as a pair. Your partner, sitting opposite, is your ally: their tricks count for you. No need to override a card they've already won. Playing coinche well is as much about listening to your partner as watching your own cards.
